My aunt has been diagnosed with sporadic CJD recently. Her deterioration has been extremely rapid - coherent and functional on Christmas and now near death in a hospice center. I cannot help but wonder if her history of mental illness over the previous 10+ years is related. Also, she worked as a nurse prior to her mental illness onset. Could she have contracted this disease in the course of her work in an urban hospital? Could this prion have been the cause of her depression, paranoia, social - isolation (schizophrenia-like behavior)? Are there any cases of CJD reported to have been preluded by years of mental illness? Are her husband, adult children, and grandchildren at risk? Are there policies in place to preserve tissue samples from CJD victims in order to aid research of this incredibly devasting disease? She will die at any moment - should I suggest that such samples be taken? So many questions, and precious few answers out there...
